Mrs. Faherty’s Fourth Grade Class Week of January 11, 2016
Dear 4th Grade Parents and Students,
Today is the first day of the 3rd quarter! This year is flying by! We have a lot more exciting projects coming in the next few months. We will be starting oral language presentations next week. Please look at the letter and schedule that went home today. I recommend keeping the schedule in the homework folder or in a safe place at home. This week is a good time to check in with your child about their classroom supplies. Please make sure they have enough pens, crayons, colored pencils, and markers.
In math, we will wrap up chapter 4. In chapter 4 we studied a variety of ways to “communicate” multiplication. We worked on multiplying two and three-digit numbers, the Distributive Property, partial products and we will finish up our chapter by working with multiplying across zeros. We will have a chapter 4 test on Friday of this week. Please make sure your child is reviewing their vocabulary cards each night. Your child should also be working on multiplication facts each night. Mastery of basic multiplication facts will help your child for this test and future concepts in math. Please make sure your child practices their basic multiplication facts each night.
In grammar, we will work on compound subjects and predicates. The class will continue to read There’s A Boy in the Girls’ Bathroom by Louis Sacher and will do a variety of activities to build comprehension and vocabulary. The students have loved reading this novel so far. We will be reading this book in a variety of ways: whole class read, reader’s theater, in literature circles, fluency partners, and character readings. Reading in a variety of ways will build your child’s comprehension and fluency. We will have a comprehension/vocabulary test on Thursday, January 14th. Students can use the vocabulary in their book and the comprehension pages to study for this test.
In social studies, we will continue working on chapter 4, which focuses on the explorers in California. We will be wrapping up chapter 4 this week and we will have a chapter 4 test towards the middle of next week. Please make sure your child is working on the mission project a little each night. Although it is not due until February, you want to make sure your child has ample time to research and write their report. We will work on the mission report again in class on Wednesday, January 13th. Please make sure your child has their research materials in class in order to work on their written report. The time I am giving in class allows your child to check in with me and ask any questions regarding their report.
In science we will continue to work on chapter 5. Chapter 5 focuses on interactions that occur in ecosystems. We will continue to work on our ecosystems project in class. We will have a chapter 5 lesson 1 quiz on Wednesday.
Important dates for the week:
Wednesday, January 13th- Chapter 5 Lesson 1 Quiz in science
